My name is Parmilla and I am originally from Malaysia. In January of 1998 I landed in Wisconsin to study as a foreign exchange student in a small town called Randolph. I was excited because I had never seen snow before and it was snowing very hard. It was also very cold. All I had was a Washington Redskins sweater that my Aunt had given me two years prior in Malaysia. I didn't know a thing about the NFL or American Football.
My host mom, who is a pastor, picked me up from the airport and took me to where my home was to be for the next year. The next morning she took me to church to introduce me to everyone and explain that I was her host daughter. During that time an elderly gentleman came up to me and said it was nice to meet me, but that my Redskins sweater was unacceptable. Truthfully, I didn't know what he was talking about. We went home and I was exhausted from the flight and the busy day I had just had. I went to sleep.
Suddenly the door rings and I went to see who it was, it was the elderly man I had met earlier that day and he handed me a Green Bay Packers sweatshirt. He explained American football and told me that the Packers would be my team now. Ever since that day I have been a Green Bay Packers fan- even as I went back to Malaysia I never forgot to look at the scores and follow my team. I came back to the U.S.A. in 2007 and just recently moved to N.Y.C. I am a Packer for life. GO PACK GO.
